Requesting Research

The County Historian's Office can provide assistance with genealogical searches and local history topics. There is no charge to check indexed resources, only a fee if you wish to receive copies of select materials. Click here to view our Mailing Rates. The office reserves the right to limit the number of copies from sources that are copyrighted or in fragile condition.

Please note that this office does not hold vital records. New York State did not require town clerks to keep birth, death, and marriage records until about 1880; after this date, birth and death records are usually available from the local registrar of the municipality where the event occurred. Marriage records are available from the Town Clerk where the marriage license was issued. If the location of these events is unknown, check the indexes on Reclaim the Records. You may also contact the New York State Department of Health.
Exception One: This office does hold marriage records kept by the County Clerk between 1908 to 1926, indexed through the County Historian's Record Index.
Exception Two: This office does hold vital records (birth, marriage, death) records kept by several town clerks between about 1847 and 1849, pursuant to a law of 1847. Towns which participated include Caledonia, Conesus, Groveland, and North Dansville, and these records are indexed and available online through the County Historian's Records Index.
