MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y. – SEPTEMBER 28, 2022 – On Wednesday, September 28, the Livingston County Board of Supervisors formally recognized the 20th anniversary of the County’s Medical Reserve Corps – a program focused on improving health and safety throughout the County.

Formed in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Medical Reserve Corps is a combination of public health, medical and non-medical volunteers who are ready, willing and able to support a variety of emergency preparedness and public health initiatives.  At the time of its founding, the program was one of just 19 similar initiatives established across the United States.

Since its inception, Livingston County Medical Reserve Corps volunteers have provided significant time planning and preparing for both man-made and natural disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes, biological attacks, mass casualty incidents and pandemics.  The MRC unit participates in large scale exercises with community partners to ensure efficient and effective collaboration and operations, which in turn helps the community to prepare for future public health emergencies.

“Our Medical Reserve Corps volunteers have supported the County’s Department of Health in multiple areas of public health for two decades,” added June Webster, the County’s Public Health Specialist and the Coordinator of the MRC.  “Among the activities they’ve supported include flu, rabies and COVID-19 clinics, educational outreach on health topics including preparing the community for emergencies, providing first aid and blood pressure checks at events and assisting at distribution sites throughout the County.  These dedicated volunteers continue to donate their time to meet the needs of our communities.”

Currently, there are 800 MRC Units nationwide with over 200,000 volunteers that have provided over three million COVID-19 response hours in local communities.
