GENESEO, N.Y., Jan. 27, 2023 — The Genesee Valley Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) has awarded Livingston County with the Project of the Year Award for its work on the Dow Road Bridge Rehabilitation Project in the Town of York.
The bridge rehabilitation, which competed against other public works projects under $5 million in Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans and Wayne Counties, was completed in September of 2022 with a final construction cost of $601,175. It received top honors in the Genesee Valley APWA’s small cities/rural communities category for structures projects. The work included replacing the deteriorating structure, which was originally built in 1925, with an entirely new bridge designed to meet current structural standards and restore its load carrying capacity. The project utilized two 50-ton, 50-foot repurposed deck panels from the former Tappan Zee Bridge near New York City. Project officials said the reuse of these available deck panels resulted in reduced materials, lead times, and construction times, along with an estimated cost savings of nearly $100,000.
Livingston County Superintendent of Highways Jason Wolfanger, Deputy Superintendent Zachary Cracknell, and former Highway Superintendent Don Higgins were all on hand to accept the award on behalf of the County during the Genesee Valley APWA awards banquet held Thursday night in Henrietta.
“We’re all really proud of the way this project turned out,” he said. “In the end we were under budget, on time and created a safe, useable structure designed to last at least 75 years. Thank you to the APWA for recognizing the outstanding work of our incredible engineers, inspectors, contractors, consultants and County crew.”
The APWA established the Project of the Year Award in the small cities/rural communities category to “promote excellence in demonstrating creativity, ingenuity, and efficiency in the delivery of public works projects that have a profound impact on the community. This award recognizes the alliance between the managing agency, the engineer and contractors who together have led to a successful completion of a public works project,” according to the APWA website.
