GENESEO, N.Y., July 7, 2023 – The GLOW Region Solid Waste Management Committee is holding a contest through September 8, 2023 to increase awareness and promote the use of composting. Those who enter over the weekend may be entered into a drawing for an earth machine composter.
To be eligible, you must live within Genesee, Livingston or Wyoming counties. To participate, eligible residents must contact the GLOW office by emailing glow@co.genesee.ny.us. From there, participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire based on GLOW’s composting demonstration site at the Genesee County Parks Interpretative Nature Center. The winner will be directly notified by GLOW.
Composting is a controlled, oxygen-required process that transforms organic material such as plant life, fruit and vegetable waste, lawn clippings and more into nutrient-rich soil or mulch through natural decomposition.
“Everyone should compost,” added Amanda Lee, Recycling Administrator. “Composting allows for the conversion of water, healthier soil and the reduction of waste in our landfills and water ways.”
Described as nature’s way of recycling, composting has numerous environmental benefits. It not only reduces trash and helps to return nutrients to soil, but it has also been proven to significantly reduce harmful emissions that are released as a result of trash build ups and burns.
Learn more about the benefits of composting or how to start the process at your home by visiting the Environmental Protection Agency’s website.
Any further questions regarding the contest should be directed to Amanda Lee, Recycling Administrator, by calling (585) 815-7906.
