GENESEO, N.Y., Nov. 8, 2023 — Livingston County, in collaboration with the Livingston County Soil & Water Conservation District (LCSWCD) and SUNY Geneseo, is proud to unveil the Livingston County Air Photos Through Time mapping application.
This innovative digital platform gives users a unique opportunity to experience the evolving landscape of Livingston County through historic aerial photography juxtaposed with modern satellite imagery. After selecting a location within the County to view, app users can toggle a slider bar across the screen to view side-by-side comparison aerial images of the same area from 1938, 2002, 2005, 2010, or 2015.
“This new tool really shows the extraordinary changes our County has undergone over the years,” said Heather Ferrero, Deputy Planning Director. “Creating this app highlights our commitment to preserving the rich history of our County, while embracing cutting edge technologies that offer a unique window into our local past.”
The new tool was made possible in part with help from Dr. Stephen Tulowiecki and his students in the SUNY Geneseo Geography department. They worked to meticulously georeference and curate a wealth of historic aerial photographs of the County from 1938, which were generously provided by the LCSWCD’s Bob Stryker. The County’s mapping consultant, Geocove, Inc., then seamlessly integrated additional aerial photos from the New York Statewide Digital Orthoimagery Program covering 2002, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2022. The resulting app is free, easy to use, and illustrates the many changes the County’s landscape has undergone over these time periods.
