November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

GENESEO, N.Y., Nov. 13, 2023 – November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Livingston County joins the American Lung Association in uniting with people from across the country to stand together against lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States. Each year, roughly 218,500 Americans are diagnosed with the disease and about 142,000 die every year from lung cancer.  While symptoms vary from person to person, common signs include a cough that gets worse or doesn’t go away, chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing up blood, often feeling extremely fatigued along with weight loss with no known cause.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT Scan) for people who have a history of smoking at least one pack a day for 20 years (two packs a day for 10 years, etc.), smoke now or have quit within the last 15 years and are between the ages of 50-80.

Livingston County is encouraging people to be proactive and speak with a primary care physician should you experience any symptoms associated with lung cancer, have smoked or have a history of cancer-related illnesses in your family.
