February is American Heart Month

GENESEO, N.Y., Feb. 12, 2024 – February is American Heart Month and Livingston County is encouraging residents to focus on their cardiovascular health and talk to a primary care provider for more information.

The leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease claims nearly 700,000 lives each year or roughly one person every 34 seconds.  It is estimated that nearly 20.1 million adults aged 20 or older have coronary heart disease while about two in 10 deaths from CAD occur in adults under the age of 65.  Furthermore, someone in the United States has a heart attack every 40 seconds with 1-in-5 heart attacks being “silent” or causing severe damage without showing any outward signs.

Some of the most common risk factors associated with heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, obesity, poor diet, inactive lifestyle, cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is encouraging all Americans to make small changes in their daily lives.  By making small adjustments to your diet, quitting smoking, reducing stress levels, exercising regularly and taking steps to reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure levels, the risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular problems can be significantly reduced.
